Walkerton is a small town located in St. Joseph County, Indiana, in the United States. In 2010, about 2,144 people lived there. It is part of a larger area called the South Bend-Mishawaka Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes nearby cities like South Bend and Mishawaka.

History of Walkerton

Walkerton was officially planned in 1856. It was named after John Walker, who helped build railroads. Railroad surveyors designed the town. The very first piece of land was bought by C.W.N. Stephens. He became Walkerton's first postmaster. Stephens moved his general store from a nearby place called West York. The Walkerton post office has been open since 1860.

During World War II, many people who worked at the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant lived in Walkerton. This plant made important supplies for the war. In August 1941, the first shells from Kingsbury were ready to be sent to the front lines.

In July 2006, Walkerton celebrated its 150th birthday. This kind of celebration is called a sesquicentennial.

In April 2015, Walkerton was in the news. This happened after a local pizza shop, Memories Pizza, made a statement about a new state law. The law was called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
