Hubert Humphrey's Early Life
Hubert Humphrey was born in a room above his father's drugstore in Wallace. His mother, Ragnild Kristine Sannes, was from Norway. His father, Hubert Horatio Humphrey Sr., was a pharmacist and a store owner.
Young Hubert spent most of his childhood in a nearby town called Doland. His father was very active in the community. He was the mayor and a member of the town council. He even served in the state government for a short time.
In the late 1920s, times were tough for many towns, including Doland. Both banks in Doland closed, and Hubert's father worked hard to keep his store open. After Hubert finished high school, his father moved the family to a bigger town called Huron. He hoped to find better business opportunities there.
