History of Doland
Doland was first planned out in 1882. The city gets its name from Franklin Henry Doland. He was a veteran of the American Civil War. Mr. Doland bought a lot of land where he thought the Chicago and North Western railroad would be built.
The railroad was moving west into South Dakota. It created a special stop in Doland for farmers to ship their goods. This helped the town grow. A post office has been open in Doland since 1882.

- Dennis Koslowski won a silver medal in the Olympics in 1992. He is an Olympic wrestler. His twin brother, Duane Koslowski, was also an Olympian.
- Jon Madsen is a professional Mixed Martial Artist.
- Tim Miles is a well-known basketball coach. He coaches at San Jose State University.
- Harvey L. Wollman was the 26th Governor of South Dakota.
- Roger Leland Wollman was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Dakota.
