Walter Lee McCarty (born February 1, 1974) is an American basketball coach and a former professional player. He currently coaches the Freseros de Irapuato team in Mexico. McCarty played in the NBA for teams like the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, and the Los Angeles Clippers. Before coaching in Mexico, he was the head coach for the Evansville Purple Aces from 2018 to 2019.

Early Life and College Basketball

Walter McCarty was born in Evansville, Indiana. He played high school basketball at William Henry Harrison High School. In 1992, as a senior, he helped his team win the Evansville II sectional championship. He was also named to the Indiana All Star Team.

McCarty then played college basketball for the University of Kentucky. In 1996, his team won the NCAA championship. A memorable moment from his college career was in 1994. McCarty made a three-pointer that finished off Kentucky's huge 31-point comeback against LSU. This was the biggest second-half comeback in NCAA history! The New York Knicks chose him as the 19th pick in the 1996 NBA Draft.

Walter McCarty's NBA Career

McCarty started his NBA journey with the New York Knicks. In October 1997, he was traded to the Boston Celtics. During that season, he played in all 82 games and started 64 of them. He set new personal bests in almost every area of his game.

For several years, McCarty was a key player coming off the bench for Boston. He was known for making important defensive plays or hitting big three-point shots. Fans in Boston loved him for his tough play, hard work, and ability to make clutch shots. Even Hall of Fame announcer Tommy Heinsohn often cheered, "I love Walter!" after McCarty made a great play.

In February 2005, McCarty was traded to the Phoenix Suns. This trade happened as the Celtics were bringing in younger players. Later, in 2005, he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Coaching Career Highlights

After his playing career, Walter McCarty became a basketball coach. In June 2007, he became an assistant coach at the University of Louisville. He worked under head coach Rick Pitino, who had coached McCarty both at Kentucky and with the Celtics.

In June 2010, McCarty joined the Indiana Pacers as an assistant coach. He worked for coach Jim O'Brien, who he also played for with the Celtics. He left the Pacers in 2011 when a new head coach took over.

In August 2013, McCarty returned to the Boston Celtics as an assistant coach for the 2013–14 NBA season.

On March 22, 2018, McCarty was hired as the head men's basketball coach at the University of Evansville. On November 12, 2019, he led Evansville to a big win against Kentucky, who was ranked #1 at the time. This was Evansville's first win ever against a top-ranked team. In late 2019, McCarty was placed on leave and later left the university after a review of his conduct.

After leaving Evansville, McCarty continued his coaching career in Mexico. In 2022, he became the head coach of the Ostioneros de Guaymas. The next year, he coached the Rayos de Hermosillo and led them to the finals of their league, CIBACOPA. In September 2023, McCarty was hired as the head coach of the Freseros de Irapuato. He returned to coach the Rayos de Hermosillo again in 2024. He is currently coaching the Freseros de Irapuato for his second season.
