Walter McCarty was born in Evansville, Indiana. He played high school basketball at William Henry Harrison High School. In 1992, as a senior, he helped his team win the Evansville II sectional championship. He was also named to the Indiana All Star Team.
McCarty then played college basketball for the University of Kentucky. In 1996, his team won the NCAA championship. A memorable moment from his college career was in 1994. McCarty made a three-pointer that finished off Kentucky's huge 31-point comeback against LSU. This was the biggest second-half comeback in NCAA history! The New York Knicks chose him as the 19th pick in the 1996 NBA Draft.
Walter McCarty's NBA Career
McCarty started his NBA journey with the New York Knicks. In October 1997, he was traded to the Boston Celtics. During that season, he played in all 82 games and started 64 of them. He set new personal bests in almost every area of his game.
For several years, McCarty was a key player coming off the bench for Boston. He was known for making important defensive plays or hitting big three-point shots. Fans in Boston loved him for his tough play, hard work, and ability to make clutch shots. Even Hall of Fame announcer Tommy Heinsohn often cheered, "I love Walter!" after McCarty made a great play.
In February 2005, McCarty was traded to the Phoenix Suns. This trade happened as the Celtics were bringing in younger players. Later, in 2005, he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Coaching Career Highlights
After his playing career, Walter McCarty became a basketball coach. In June 2007, he became an assistant coach at the University of Louisville. He worked under head coach Rick Pitino, who had coached McCarty both at Kentucky and with the Celtics.

In August 2013, McCarty returned to the Boston Celtics as an assistant coach for the 2013–14 NBA season.
On March 22, 2018, McCarty was hired as the head men's basketball coach at the University of Evansville. On November 12, 2019, he led Evansville to a big win against Kentucky, who was ranked #1 at the time. This was Evansville's first win ever against a top-ranked team.
