Walter Langdon Parsons (born August 16, 1881, died March 2, 1955) was an important Australian politician. He served in the Australian Parliament, helping to make decisions for the country.
Early Life and Education
Walter Parsons was born in North Adelaide, South Australia. His father, John Langdon Parsons, was also a politician. Walter had a half-brother named Herbert Angas Parsons. Walter went to several schools, including Queen's School and Whinham College.
Business Career
Walter started working at D & W Murray Limited in 1898. Later, in 1906, he became a store owner in Gladstone, South Australia. He ran a shop called F. C. Catt Specialty Stores. In 1912, he changed the shop's name to W. L. Parsons Stores.
In 1919, Walter sold his stores in Gladstone. He then became a citrus grower in Paradise. In 1922, he bought another store in Kadina. He ran this business as W. Parsons & Co. until 1925, when he was elected to parliament.
Community Involvement
Walter was very active in his local community. He was the mayor of the Corporate Town of Gladstone from 1914 to 1916. Near the end of World War I, in 1918, he tried to join the army, but he was not accepted.
By 1925, Walter had moved to Haldon Gardens, which is now part of Kensington Park. He served as a councillor for the Kensington Park Ward in the District Council of Burnside. Walter was also a lay reader for the Anglican Church for more than 20 years. He was involved in church committees and was a vice-president of the Demobilised Soldiers' Association, which helped soldiers who had returned from war.
Political Career
In 1925, Walter Parsons was elected to the Australian House of Representatives. This is one of the two houses of the Australian Parliament. He represented the area called Angas. He was a member of the Nationalist Party of Australia.
Walter won the election against the person who held the seat before him, Moses Gabb, who was from the Australian Labor Party. Walter served in parliament until 1929. In that year, Moses Gabb defeated him in the next election. After leaving parliament, Walter became an insurance agent. He passed away in 1955.
