Where is Wandal Located?
Wandal is found about four kilometres (or 2.5 miles) north-west of the main city area of Rockhampton.
A Look at Wandal's Past
The land where Wandal now stands was first measured and mapped in the 1860s. This happened soon after the town of Rockhampton itself was planned out. At first, Wandal was home to large properties owned by rich people from Rockhampton. Some of these owners included W.H. Wiseman, John Jardine, William Knox D'Arcy, and P.F. MacDonald. More houses and smaller developments started to appear later in the 1800s and into the early 1900s.
Schools in Wandal's History
The Hall School, which is a local primary school, first opened its doors in 1910. It was originally for girls and very young children (infants).
The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart also started a Catholic primary school called St Joseph's School. It opened either in 1912 or on January 24, 1916.
Rockhampton State High School was built on Exhibition Road in 1961. At that time, it was connected to the Rockhampton Technical College. However, the high school and the technical college became separate in 1962.
Leichhardt Ward School, which was a school just for boys, closed in 1987. Its students then joined The Hall State School.

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School
St Joseph's Catholic Primary School is a Catholic primary school for boys and girls. It teaches students from Prep to Year 6 and is located at 4 Herbert Street. In 2018, there were 289 students enrolled at this school.
Rockhampton State High School
Rockhampton State High School is a government high school for students in Years 7 to 12. It is for both boys and girls and can be found on Campbell Street. In 2018, a large number of students, 1098, were attending this high school. It also has a special education program to help students with specific needs.
Rockhampton Positive Learning Centre
The Rockhampton Positive Learning Centre is a special high school for students in Years 8 to 12. It is on Murray Street, at the same location as The Hall State School. This centre helps students who need extra support beyond what a regular classroom can offer. The main goal is to help these students return to a normal school or to start vocational training (learning skills for a job).
