A Look at The Range's History
How The Range Got Its Name
The suburb gets its name from the Athelstane Range. This range was named after a house called Mount Athelstane. A person named William Wiseman, who was a "lands commissioner" (someone in charge of land for the government), built this house around 1859.
Important Buildings and Milestones
In 1875, Rockhampton's very first water storage facility was built. It was placed on top of Governor's Hill, which is part of the Athelstane Range. This helped provide water to the growing town.
A famous school, Rockhampton Grammar School, was built on Agnes Street in 1883. It is the oldest school in Rockhampton and has been teaching students for a very long time.
