Wangolina, South Australia facts for kids
Wangolina is a small place, called a locality, in the state of South Australia, Australia. It's located on the south-east coast, looking out over the Southern Ocean. This part of the ocean is also known as the Great Australian Bight.
Wangolina is about 252 kilometers (about 156 miles) south-east of Adelaide city centre, which is the capital city of South Australia. It's also about 144 kilometers (about 89 miles) south of Mount Gambier.
The name "Wangolina" comes from Wangolina Station, which was once a large farm. The boundaries for this locality were officially set in December 1998.
A water channel called the Wangolina drain connects to the Butchers Gap Drain. These drains are part of a big system built in the south-east of the state to manage water, especially since European settlers arrived.
Wangolina includes land along the coast near Cape Jaffa. It shares this area with another locality also called Cape Jaffa. Wangolina has coastline along Lacepede Bay to the north and the open ocean to the south. The Southern Ports Highway passes through Wangolina, connecting Kingston SE in the north to Robe in the south.
Most of the land in Wangolina is used for agriculture, which means farming. There's also a strip of land right along the coast that is set aside for conservation, to protect nature.
Wangolina is part of the federal Barker area for national government, and the state MacKillop area for state government. It is also managed by the Kingston District Council, which is the local government.
