Wanham (pronounced "WAHN-um") is a small community called a hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada. It is part of Birch Hills County. Wanham is located about 29 kilometers (18 miles) east of Rycroft. It is also about 106 kilometers (66 miles) north of Grande Prairie. This area is known for its farmlands in the Peace River Country. The Saddle River, which flows into the Peace River, is just north of Wanham. The name Wanham might have come from a place in England.
The main jobs in Wanham are in agriculture (farming) and ranching (raising animals). The community helps support the farms around it. A wood products factory called Newpro used to be a big employer here. It closed down in 2006.
A Look Back in Time
Wanham started in 1916. It was a stop on the Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia Railway line. The first post office in Wanham opened in 1918.
Wanham used to be a village. This means it had its own local government. But in 1999, it became part of Birch Hills County. This change happened by a special government decision. Today, the main office for Birch Hills County is located right in Wanham.
