Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, Inc. is the part of Warner Bros. Discovery that brings movies and TV shows into your home. You might know it by its shorter name, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. In the past, it was called Warner Home Video.
This company is responsible for putting the huge library of Warner Bros. movies and shows onto DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. It also makes them available to buy or rent online through digital services and streaming platforms.
Have you ever watched a movie from Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, or a show from HBO, Cartoon Network, or Discovery Channel at home? It's likely that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment made that possible. They also handle home releases for many other famous brands, including DC Entertainment, Adult Swim, and even Amazon MGM Studios.
Today, their DVDs and Blu-rays in the United States and Canada are made and shipped by a company called Studio Distribution Services. This is a team-up between Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Company History
The company started in 1978. Back then, people watched movies at home on VHS and Betamax tapes. In late 1979, Warner Bros. released its first 20 movies on these tapes for people to buy.
As technology changed, so did the company. They started releasing movies on videodisc formats, which were like large records that played movies. Later, they became a major supporter of the DVD format. In 1997, they were one of the first companies to release movies on DVD in the United States. One of their first big DVD releases was the movie Twister.
A Warner Bros. executive named Warren Lieberfarb is often called "the father of the DVD" because he helped make the format so popular. By 2003, the company had stopped releasing movies on VHS tapes and focused only on DVDs.
Bringing Back Classic Movies
In 2009, the company started the Warner Archive Collection. This special service lets fans order DVDs of old or hard-to-find movies and TV shows from the Warner Bros. library. These movies are made-to-order, so you can get a copy of a classic film that might not be in regular stores. These titles are also available to download digitally.
Working with Other Studios
Over the years, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has worked with other major movie studios. For a long time, they handled the home video releases for the MGM/UA library, which includes many famous classic films. In 2020, they regained the rights to distribute MGM's movies on home video.
After the big merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery, the company also began distributing shows from networks like Discovery Channel and Animal Planet in 2022.

In 2020, Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced they would work together. They created a new company in North America called Studio Distribution Services, LLC (SDS). This company handles the job of making and shipping physical media, like DVDs and Blu-rays, for both studios.
This partnership helps both companies work more efficiently. In other parts of the world, one company helps distribute the other's movies. For example, in Japan, Universal handles Warner Bros. releases. In Italy and the United Kingdom, Warner Bros. handles Universal's releases.
Since 2021, you can see the SDS logo on the back of new Warner Bros. and Universal movie cases. In 2024, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment also made a deal with SDS to have them distribute their physical movie releases.
