Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment is a company that helps bring movies and TV shows from Warner Bros. Discovery to your home. It used to be known as Warner Home Video and WCI Home Video. This company is a big part of how you watch films and series outside of movie theaters.

It started in 1978 as WCI Home Video. The company began by releasing twenty films on Betamax and VHS tapes in the United States in late 1979. They quickly added more movies and shows to their collection in 1979 and 1980.

Today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment distributes movies and TV shows from many companies. These include Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, DC Entertainment, HBO, Cartoon Network, and Discovery Channel. They release content on formats like DVD, Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, and through digital streaming.

The History of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

The company began in 1978. It started by releasing twenty films on Betamax and VHS tapes in the United States in late 1979. Over 1979 and 1980, the company added many more titles.

Expanding to New Formats

Warner Bros. also started exploring the videodisc market. They allowed companies like MCA DiscoVision and RCA's SelectaVision to sell their films. By 1985, Warner was releasing its own movies on these formats.

Warner Home Video also tried a "rental-only" plan for some videos. This meant you could only rent the movies, not buy them. Films like Superman II and Excalibur were released this way.

Important Deals and Partnerships

In 1990, Warner Home Video gained the rights to distribute films from MGM and UA around the world. This deal helped MGM/UA when they were bought by another company. This agreement ended early in 2000.

In return, Warner Home Video gained full control over MGM's older film library. This included movies made before May 1986.

Leading the Way with DVD

On December 20, 1996, Warner Home Video was one of the first major companies to release movies on the new DVD format. They released films like Assassins and Blade Runner on DVD in Japan. They then released them in the United States on March 24, 1997.

A Warner Bros. executive named Warren Lieberfarb is often called "the father of DVD." In 2003, Warner Home Video became the first company to release movies only on DVD, without also releasing them on VHS tapes.

Introducing the Warner Archive Collection

In 2009, Warner Home Video started the Warner Archive Collection. This special collection lets people order DVDs of rare films and TV shows. These are often titles that are not widely available. You can also download these films digitally.

Working with Other Companies

On January 14, 2020, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment teamed up with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. They created a 10-year partnership to combine their physical operations in North America. This new company is called Studio Distribution Services, LLC.

This partnership means that Studio Distribution Services now handles the physical release of both Warner Bros. and Universal movies. Starting in 2022, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment also began distributing TV shows from Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. This happened after the Warner Bros. Discovery companies merged.
