Warramboo is a small place, also called a locality, in South Australia. It is located on the Eyre Peninsula. This area is about 334 kilometers (208 miles) north-west of Adelaide, the state capital. It is also about 26 kilometers (16 miles) south-east of Wudinna.
Warramboo is 189 kilometers (117 miles) north of Port Lincoln on the Tod Highway. It is the end point for railway lines that carry wheat from Port Lincoln. These railway lines, part of the Eyre Peninsula Railway, were built between 1907 and 1915. They helped the area grow its cereal (grain) farming industry. The tall grain silos are a well-known sight in Warramboo.
In 2016, the population of Warramboo and its nearby areas was 108 people. Warramboo does not have many shops or petrol stations. However, it still has a post office that serves the local community. Most people in Warramboo work in agriculture, which means farming.
Warramboo is also home to one of the largest old windmills in the southern half of the world. It is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of the town and is still there today. The water from this windmill was too salty for people or animals to drink.

History of Warramboo
Who lived in Warramboo first?
The first people to live in the Warramboo area were the Nauo people. They are the traditional owners of this land. The name 'warramboo' means 'a lake or place of water'. This name refers to the many salty swamps in the region.
Early Buildings and Education
A public school was built in Warramboo when European settlers first arrived. This school taught children aged 5 to 12 years old. It was open from 1920 until it closed in 2002. The town hall was also built in the 1920s. The first hall was made of wood and iron. A new stone hall was built in its place in 1934.
Local Sports and Football
The local Australian rules football team is called the Central Eyre Football Club. It was formed in 1986. This happened when the Warramboo and Kyancutta Football Clubs joined together. The Central Eyre Football Club was one of six teams in the Mid West Football League.
Future Plans for Mining
What is the Central Eyre Iron Project?
A company called Iron Road Limited has plans to build a large mine near Warramboo. This mine would dig for a type of iron ore called magnetite. The project is called the Central Eyre Iron Project.
The company plans to produce a very high-quality iron material. This material would be used by steel makers. They expect to produce about 24 million tonnes of this iron material each year. This project could last for almost 30 years.
How will the mine transport materials?
Iron Road Limited has bought land for a new deep-water port. This port will be at Cape Hardy, on the western side of Spencer Gulf. A 148-kilometer (92-mile) pathway, called a utilities corridor, would connect Warramboo to this new port. This corridor would include:
- A large railway line for heavy trains.
- A service road.
- A power line.
- A water pipeline.
