Washta is a small city located in Cherokee County, Iowa, United States. In 2020, about 209 people lived there. Washta is famous for being "The Coldest Spot in Iowa"! On January 12, 1912, it got super cold, reaching -47°F (-44°C).
The name "Washta" has an interesting story from 1868. A man named Whisman had a farm that became a stop for mail and goods traveling between towns. He was asked to be the town's first postmaster. When asked what the town's name would be, he remembered meeting two Native Americans. They had looked at his gun and said, Wash-tay, Wash-tay, which meant "good." Whisman changed the pronunciation a little and decided to call the town Washta.
