A Look at Water Valley's History

One of the first people to settle here was Captain William Turner. He arrived around 1878. He started the Whitbarrow Ranch. He also built a stone house. This house was later used as a place for soldiers to rest during World War II.

Two men named Phelin and Glynn helped found the community. They built a dam on the North Concho River. They also dug a special ditch to bring water for farming. This helped more settlers move to the area. Many of these early settlers were English immigrants.

The local post office had different names over the years. From 1885 to 1888, it was called Yandell, Argenta, or Stella. From 1888 to 1889, it was known as Rethaville, Mayes Store, or Mayesville. Finally, in 1889, the community was officially named Water Valley.

By 1914, Water Valley had grown to 175 people. It had a general store, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers from seeds), and two cotton buyers. Around this time, the Water Valley Independent School District was also created.

The number of people living in Water Valley changed over time. In 1940, there were 140 residents. The population reached its highest point in the mid-1950s, with 180 people. After that, it slowly went down to about 120 people by the end of the 20th century.

Even though Water Valley is not an official city, it still has its own post office. The ZIP code for Water Valley is 76958.
