Waterford is a small community in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. It is known as a census-designated place, which means it's an area identified by the government for statistics, but it doesn't have its own city government. Waterford is located between the towns of Holly Springs and Oxford along Highway 7.

The first time Waterford was officially counted as a census-designated place was in the 2020 census. At that time, 112 people lived there.

Waterford's Past: A Look at History

Waterford got its name because of the many springs and the large amount of water that comes from Spring Creek. The very first community of Waterford was actually located a bit west of where it is today. In the year 1900, about 128 people lived in Waterford.

The community was officially started on February 8, 1838. It was built along the Mississippi Central Railroad, which was an important train line.

During the American Civil War, a small fight happened in Waterford. This event took place on November 29 and 30, 1862. It was part of a larger campaign by the Union Army that focused on the Mississippi Central Railroad.

Where is Waterford? Geography and Nature

Waterford is found in the southern part of Marshall County. State Highway 7 runs through the western side of the community. If you go north on this highway for about 8 miles, you'll reach Holly Springs. Holly Springs is the county seat, which means it's where the main government offices for Marshall County are located. If you head south on Highway 7 for about 22 miles, you'll arrive in Oxford.

Right next to Waterford, to the north and west, is Wall Doxey State Park. This park is a great place for outdoor activities. Also, the area to the east of Waterford is part of the Holly Springs National Forest.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the Waterford census-designated place covers an area of about 0.97 square miles. All of this area is land. Little Spring Creek flows along the western edge of the community. This creek starts in Wall Doxey State Park and flows south towards the Little Tallahatchie River.
