History of Waukesha Village

How Waukesha Got Its Name

The area where Waukesha Village is located was once part of the Town of Muskego. It was first called Prairie Village, then Prairieville. This name came from a Native American settlement nearby. In 1847, the name changed to Waukesha. This happened after Waukesha County was created from a part of Milwaukee County.

From Town to Village

On January 10, 1852, the settled area of Prairieville became the village of Waukesha. Later, it grew into the City of Waukesha. The rest of the original area kept the name "Town of Waukesha."

More recently, on May 12, 2020, the former Town of Waukesha officially became a village. Residents voted strongly in favor of this change. The City of Waukesha tried to stop it with a lawsuit. However, the Village won the legal battle. The Wisconsin Supreme Court agreed with a lower court's decision, allowing the incorporation to stand.
