Weaver is a ghost town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. A ghost town is a place where people used to live, but now no one does. It is located about one mile northeast of Eudora.

The Story of Weaver, Kansas

Weaver was once a small community with a post office and businesses. Today, nothing is left of it. The town disappeared because of powerful floods.

Early Days and Founders

Long ago, the land where Weaver was located belonged to the Shawnee Native Americans. Later, in 1865, a man named Henry Weaver bought a large part of this land. He moved there from Pennsylvania with his wife, Nancy, and their seven children.

Henry's youngest son, John F. Weaver, became an important person in the area. He owned several businesses. These included a general store, a rock crushing company, and even a factory that made potato buckets!

Life in Weaver and the Post Office

The community of Weaver was built very close to the Kansas River. This area is known as "Weaver Bottoms." It is a flat area next to the river, which means it was often flooded.

A post office opened in Weaver in 1891. This was a central place for people to send and receive mail. It stayed open for about 12 years, closing in 1903.

The Floods That Washed Weaver Away

Because Weaver was in a floodplain, it often suffered from floods. Big floods in 1903 and 1908 caused a lot of damage to the community.

However, the worst flood happened much later. The Great Flood of 1951 was incredibly powerful. It completely destroyed everything that was left of Weaver. After this flood, all the people who lived there had to move away for good.

Today, you won't find any buildings or signs of the old town of Weaver. It has completely vanished, making it a true ghost town.
