Weedpatch is a small community in Kern County, California, United States. It is a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the government for collecting information, but it's not officially a city. Weedpatch is about 10 miles (16 km) south-southeast of Bakersfield. It was once known as "Weed Patch" and "Alexander's Corner."
Where is Weedpatch?
This community is located about 387 feet (118 meters) above sea level. You can find it off State Route 184, also called Weedpatch Highway. It is southeast of Bakersfield and south of Lamont. Weedpatch covers an area of about 3.6 square miles (9.3 square kilometers).
A Look at History
The name "Weed Patch" was first used for this area in 1874. However, the community itself officially started in 1922. It was also called "Alexander's Corner" to honor a local resident named Cal Alexander.
Weedpatch is famous for the Arvin Federal Government Camp. People often called it "Weedpatch Camp." This camp became very important during the Great Depression. It was a safe place for migrant workers who had to leave their homes because of the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl was a time when severe dust storms damaged farms in the central United States. Many families from places like Oklahoma moved to California looking for work.
The camp helped these families find a place to stay and get support. Today, the camp still helps migrant workers. It is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Weedpatch.
