History of Welton
Welton started in 1871. This was after the Davenport and St. Paul Railroad built its tracks through the area. The railroad helped the community grow.
Education in Welton
Welton is part of the Central DeWitt Community School District. This school district covers a large part of Clinton County. Before July 1, 2014, it was called the Central Clinton Community School District.
For over 40 years, Welton had its own elementary school. It was called Welton Elementary School. Students in junior high and high school took a bus to DeWitt.
Welton Elementary School Closure
The Welton Elementary School building was 85 years old. It closed in 2005. This happened because of money problems and fewer students. On April 5, 2006, the old school building was torn down.
Before 1961, the school also taught junior high and high school students. It was part of the Welton Independent School District. Their sports teams were known as the Wolverines. The junior-senior high school closed in 1961. This was when Welton joined with other school districts to form the Central Community School District.
School Facilities
Welton Elementary had three buildings. The main building had a computer lab, a library, and a media center on its third floor. There was also an art room and a teachers' lounge. Another building had two classrooms.
In the 1998–1999 school year, Welton Elementary had 217 students. Students from Grand Mound Elementary also used the library and computer facilities at Welton. The district thought about making Welton Elementary bigger. However, they decided not to because the building was old. It was also hard to change because of its design. For example, the narrow staircases made it difficult to add chairlifts. This meant Welton was not fully accessible for students with disabilities.
Around 2001, there was a plan to expand schools in DeWitt. This plan would have brought services and facilities for students with disabilities to one place. It also would have closed the schools in Grand Mound and Welton. Welton Elementary closed in the summer of 2005. It was torn down in 2006. A historic newspaper was found inside the building's cornerstone. The City of Welton government received many items from the school.
