Wemme is a small community in Oregon, located in Clackamas County. It is found in the northwest United States, east of the city of Portland. Wemme is part of the Mount Hood Corridor, a scenic area near Mount Hood. You can find it along U.S. Route 26, between the towns of Welches and Brightwood. It is one of the communities known as the Villages at Mount Hood.
How Wemme Got Its Name
Wemme was named after a man named E. Henry Wemme. He was a businessman from Portland. In 1899, he bought the very first automobile in Oregon, a car made by the Locomobile Company.
Wemme's Gift to the Public
E. Henry Wemme also played a big part in the history of the Barlow Road. In 1912, he bought the rights to this historic road. Two years later, after he passed away, he left the Barlow Road to the public. This means everyone could use it freely.
