Welches is a small community in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. It is called an unincorporated community because it is not officially a city or town.
You can find Welches in the Mount Hood Corridor, which is an area near Mount Hood. It sits between the communities of Zigzag and Wemme. A major road, U.S. Route 26, runs right through it. Welches is also part of a group of places known as the Villages at Mount Hood.
History of Welches
The community of Welches got its name from a man named Samuel Welch. He was a homesteader, which means he claimed land to live on and farm. Samuel came from Virginia and settled near a stream called Welches Creek in 1882. He moved there with his son, William, after his wife passed away. Samuel Welch himself died in 1898.
A post office, where people could send and receive mail, opened in Welches in 1905. A few years later, in 1909, a hotel was built in the village. This hotel operated for eight years, closing in 1917. Later, nine small cottages were built where the hotel once stood.
Today, Welches is home to a modern hotel and a golf resort. The resort even has courts for playing croquet. The community also has the Hoodland library, which is managed by the city of Sandy.
