Wendy Foster's Architecture Career
Wendy Foster was a very important person in British architecture. She helped create buildings that are still admired today.
Starting Team 4
In 1963, Wendy Cheesman (her name before marriage) helped create an architectural company called Team 4. She started it with other architecture graduates: Su Rogers, Norman Foster, and Richard Rogers.
Wendy's sister, Georgie Wolton, was also part of the group at first. Georgie was the only one who was a fully qualified architect, which meant the company could officially start working. Georgie left after a few months. The other members then worked hard to pass their own professional exams while still designing buildings.
Famous Buildings by Team 4
While working with Team 4, Wendy helped design several important buildings. One of these was Creek Vean House in Feock, Cornwall, England. This house was special because it was the first house ever to win an award from the RIBA.
Other notable buildings from this time include:
- Reliance Controls factory in Swindon (1967)
- Jaffe House (also called Skybreak House) in Maldon, Essex (1965-1966)
- Wates Housing in Coulsdon, Surrey (1965)
Founding Foster Associates
By June 1967, Team 4 decided to split up. Richard and Su Rogers started their own company called Richard and Su Rogers Architects. Norman Foster and Wendy Foster (who was then married to Norman) started their own company called Foster Associates.
Wendy Foster was involved in designing many famous buildings with Foster Associates. Some of these include:
- The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts
- The Willis Faber and Dumas building
- The HSBC Building in Hong Kong
