Team 4 was a British architecture company. It was started in 1963 by four friends who had just finished studying architecture. These friends were Su Brumwell, Wendy Cheesman, Norman Foster, and Richard Rogers.

The company worked together for a few years. However, they had some disagreements. By June 1967, Norman Foster and Richard Rogers decided to close the company.

When Team 4 first started, Wendy Cheesman's sister, Georgie Wolton, was also part of the group. Georgie was the only one who was a fully qualified architect at the time. This meant the company could legally work on projects. Georgie left after only a few months. The others then worked hard to pass their own professional exams while still taking on projects.

Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, and Su Brumwell first met while studying at Yale University in the United States. Later, Richard Rogers and Su Brumwell got married. Norman Foster and Wendy Cheesman also got married.

Amazing Buildings by Team 4

Team 4 designed several interesting buildings during their time together. These projects helped them become known in the world of architecture.

Creek Vean: A Special House

One of the very first projects for Team 4 was a house called Creek Vean. It was built for Su Brumwell's parents in Feock, Cornwall. To help pay for the house, her parents sold a painting by a famous artist named Piet Mondrian.

Creek Vean took three years to build and was finished in 1966. This house was very special. It was the first house ever to win an award from the R.I.B.A.. The R.I.B.A. is a group that gives awards for great architecture in the UK.

Creek Vean is now a "listed building." This means it's an important historical building. It is protected so it cannot be changed too much or knocked down.

Skybreak House and Other Designs

Team 4 also designed Skybreak House. This house is located in Radlett, Hertfordshire. It was built between 1965 and 1966. The inside of Skybreak House was even used in a movie called A Clockwork Orange.

The last project Team 4 worked on was the Reliance Controls building in Swindon. It was finished in 1967, just before the company closed. This building was special because it helped bring people together. It had one main entrance and a shared cafeteria for everyone, from managers to factory workers. This was unusual at the time.

Richard Rogers has said that a plan for 120 houses in Coulsdon, Surrey, called Water Homes, was "probably the most important project" from their Team 4 days.

What Happened Next?

After Team 4 closed, the architects went on to do great things. Norman Foster started his own company called Foster Associates. Richard Rogers also started his own company, the Richard Rogers Partnership. Both became very famous architects.
