Georgie Wolton (born Georgina Cheesman; February 1934 – 25 August 2021) was a talented British architect. She was one of the first members of a famous architecture group called Team 4. A well-known critic, Jonathan Meades, once said she was the "outstanding woman architect" of her time. He meant she was one of the best female architects before Zaha Hadid, who is also very famous.

Her Early Life and Training
Georgie Cheesman, as she was known then, studied architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. This is a very well-known school for architects. During her travels to the United States, she saw some amazing buildings. She especially loved the Eames House and Philip Johnson's Glass House. These buildings likely inspired her own work later on.
Starting Team 4
In 1963, Georgie helped start an important architectural firm called Team 4. She created this group with her sister, Wendy Cheesman, and other future famous architects like Su Brumwell, Norman Foster, and Richard Rogers.
Georgie was the only one in the group who was a fully qualified architect at the time. This meant her license allowed the new company to officially start working on projects. She stayed with Team 4 for a few months. After she left, the other members worked to pass their own professional exams.
Her Own Architectural Work
After leaving Team 4, Georgie Wolton started her own architecture practice. She designed several notable buildings and spaces. Her most famous projects are the Cliff Road Studios in Lower Holloway, London. She also designed the beautiful garden for The River Cafe in Hammersmith. Both of these projects were completed in the late 1960s.
The CorTen Steel House
Georgie also designed a unique house in Surrey, England. This house was special because it used an experimental material called CorTen steel. CorTen steel is known for its rusty look, which actually protects it. This house was one of the first in the UK to use CorTen steel as a main part of its structure.
Experts say that Georgie Wolton was a leader in architecture. She was known for taking ideas from early modern architecture and making them new again. She was also seen as a rare and important woman architect during the 1970s and 80s.
A Passion for Garden Design
Later in her life, Georgie Wolton found a new passion: garden design. She became a very successful landscape architect, even without formal training in that field. She passed away on August 25, 2021, at the age of 87. Her work left an important mark on British architecture and design.
