Wentworth Earl Miller III (born June 2, 1972) is an American actor. He became very well known after playing Michael Scofield in the TV show Prison Break. For this role, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 2005.
He also started writing movies, with his first film being the thriller Stoker in 2013. Later, in 2014, he began playing Leonard Snart / Captain Cold in the TV series The Flash. He then became a main actor in its spin-off show, Legends of Tomorrow.

Early Life and Education
Miller was born in Chipping Norton, England. His parents were American. His mother, Roxann, was a special education teacher. His father, Wentworth E. Miller II, was a lawyer and teacher. At the time of Miller's birth, his father was studying at the University of Oxford.
When he was one year old, his family moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn, in the United States. He went to Midwood High School in Brooklyn. In 1995, he graduated from Princeton University. He earned a degree in English. While at Princeton, he sang with an a cappella group called the Princeton Tigertones.
Acting Career Highlights
In 1995, Miller moved to Los Angeles to become an actor. He has said that becoming a star was a long and difficult journey. He faced many challenges and failures. But he felt he had to keep going.
Early TV and Film Roles
Miller's first TV appearance was in 1998. He played a student who turned into a sea monster. This was in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer called "Go Fish".
His first main role was in 2002. He played David Scott in the ABC mini-series Dinotopia. After some smaller TV roles, he acted in the 2003 film The Human Stain. He played the younger version of a character named Coleman Silk. Miller worked hard to prepare for this role. He even trained for four months to play a boxer. In 2003, he also had a small part in the movie Underworld.
Breakthrough with Prison Break
In 2005, Miller was chosen for the main role of Michael Scofield. This was in the Fox Network drama Prison Break. He played a smart engineer who plans a big escape. He helps his brother, Lincoln Burrows, get out of prison. His character had a very large tattoo covering his upper body. It took over four hours to apply the special effects for this tattoo.
His acting in Prison Break earned him a 2005 Golden Globe Award nomination. He was nominated for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series. The show ended in 2009 after four seasons. However, a new nine-episode fifth season was released in 2017. Miller returned to play his role.
Music Videos and Other Appearances
Miller appeared in two Mariah Carey music videos in 2005. He was a party guest in "It's Like That". He played her love interest in "We Belong Together". The director of these videos also directed the pilot episode of Prison Break.
He also appeared in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2009. In 2010, Miller was in Resident Evil: Afterlife. This was the fourth film in the Resident Evil movie series. He played Chris Redfield, a character from the video games.
Screenwriting and Producing
Miller wrote the movie script for the film Stoker. He also wrote a story that happened before Stoker, called Uncle Charlie. He used the name Ted Foulke for these scripts. He said he wanted the scripts to be judged on their own.
Stoker is about a teenage girl who meets a mysterious uncle after her father dies. Miller described it as a "horror film, a family drama and a psychological thriller." The film was released in 2013. It received mostly good reviews from critics.
Miller also wrote the script for the 2016 horror film The Disappointments Room. This movie received negative reviews. He is also in talks to write a movie based on the book The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.
Later TV Roles
In 2014, Miller joined the cast of The CW superhero series The Flash. He played Leonard Snart / Captain Cold. He appeared in the fourth episode of the first season. He then continued his role on Legends of Tomorrow. These shows brought him back together with Dominic Purcell. Purcell was his co-star from Prison Break.
Miller left Legends of Tomorrow as a main actor after season one. However, he signed a contract to keep playing Captain Cold. This allowed him to appear on different shows in the Arrowverse.
In 2020, Miller said he was no longer interested in playing straight characters. He stated he would not be part of a sixth season of Prison Break if it were made.
In 2023, Miller narrated the audiobook for the 1995 book Prayers for Bobby. In 2024, it was reported that Miller and Dominic Purcell would work together again. They will be in a new drama called Snatchback.
Personal Life
Miller lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. He has citizenship in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
In 2021, Wentworth shared that he had been diagnosed with autism a year before. He posted on Instagram that this is part of who he is. He said it is central to everything he has achieved.
In 2016, a mental health charity called Active Minds announced Miller would be an ambassador. He shared that he has struggled with depression since childhood. He said it has cost him time, chances, and many sleepless nights. He shared this after a picture of him was used to make fun of his weight gain. He provided links to help organizations like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
