The West End is a part of Sheffield, a city in England. It's not a single, clearly marked place. Instead, it's a general area that includes parts of the city centre and some western neighbourhoods. People have used the name "West End" for this area for over 150 years.
What is the West End Today?
In 2007, the Sheffield City Council (the local government) tried to make the West End's borders clearer. They did this as part of a plan called "Connect Sheffield."
Key Areas in the West End
The council decided the West End includes two important areas:
- The Devonshire Quarter
- The St George's Quarter
These "quarters" are like special zones within the city centre. They are located west and southwest of the city's inner ring road. A ring road is a major road that goes around a city or a part of it.
The West End also includes the University of Sheffield campus. This university area even crosses over the ring road. So, today, the West End mainly refers to the area around Glossop Road and Western Bank, stretching up towards Broomhill.
Important Places in the West End
The West End is home to several key places, especially hospitals and the university.
- Sheffield Children's Hospital: This hospital provides special care for children.
- Former Central Sheffield University Hospitals: These include the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (which has the Jessop Wing), Weston Park Hospital, and the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. These hospitals are now part of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which helps manage healthcare in the area.
- University of Sheffield: A large part of this university is located in the West End. It's a place where many students come to learn and study different subjects.
