West Jefferson is a small village located in Madison County, Ohio, in the United States. In 2020, about 4,137 people lived there. The village is found along U.S. Route 40. It has a close connection with the area around it, called Jefferson Township. This includes several neighborhoods just outside the village limits.

History of West Jefferson
West Jefferson was first known by a different name: New Hampton. It was planned out around 1831. A post office opened in the area in 1833. That's when it started being called West Jefferson.
Geography and Location
West Jefferson is located in the state of Ohio. The United States Census Bureau says the village covers a total area of about 4.87 square miles (12.61 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 4.85 square miles (12.56 square kilometers), is land. A very small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water.

In 2010, a census counted 4,222 people living in West Jefferson. There were 1,617 households and 1,149 families. The village had about 870.5 people per square mile (336.1 people per square kilometer). There were also 1,709 homes, with about 352.4 homes per square mile (136.1 homes per square kilometer).
Most people in the village, about 97.6%, were White. A small number were African American (0.5%), Asian (0.3%), or from other races (0.2%). About 1.4% of the people were of two or more races. People who identified as Hispanic or Latino made up 0.9% of the population.
Households and Families
Out of the 1,617 households, 35.4% had children under 18 living with them. About 51.3% were married couples living together. Some households had a female head without a husband (13.7%), or a male head without a wife (6.1%). About 28.9% of households were not families.
Also, 25.7% of all households had only one person living there. About 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. On average, there were 2.55 people in each household and 3.02 people in each family.
Age Groups
The average age of people in the village was 38.5 years. About 25.5% of residents were under 18 years old. About 7.9% were between 18 and 24 years old. People aged 25 to 44 made up 25.4% of the population. Those aged 45 to 64 were 25.6%. Finally, 15.6% of the people were 65 years old or older. The village had slightly more females (51.1%) than males (48.9%).
Community Library
West Jefferson has a public library called the Hurt/Battelle Memorial Library. In 2005, the library lent out over 81,000 items to its 9,500 members. The library has more than 57,000 books and other materials. It also gets over 60 different magazines regularly. The library used to have a large collection of VHS tapes too.
