West Point is a small community in Ohio, United States. It's not an official city or town, but a place where people live together without a formal local government. It used to be a "coal town," meaning coal mining was very important there. West Point is located where three main roads meet: U.S. Route 30, Ohio State Route 45, and Ohio State Route 518. It has its own ZIP code, 44492. West Point is also part of the Salem micropolitan area, which is a smaller city area.

History of West Point

West Point was never officially planned out on a map like many towns. It grew up around the Youngstown and Ohio River Railroad. In the early 1900s, the railroad had a coal power plant here.

A post office served West Point for many years. It was open from 1836 to 1903. Then, it reopened in 1955 and stayed open until 2018.

A famous event from the American Civil War happened near West Point. On July 26, 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan was defeated here. He had led his soldiers on a long journey, raiding towns along the Ohio River.

Union General James M. Shackelford and his army, along with local volunteer soldiers, caught Morgan. They captured him and his remaining men after a short fight just west of West Point. A special marker, called the John H. Morgan Surrender Site, shows where this important event took place.
