West Whittier-Los Nietos is a community in Los Angeles County, California. It's located close to the San Gabriel River and the I-605 Freeway. This area is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a place the government counts for population but isn't officially a city.
In 2010, about 25,540 people lived here. The area is actually made up of two separate communities: Los Nietos (which means "the grandchildren" in Spanish) and West Whittier.

West Whittier-Los Nietos is located at 33.976113 degrees North and 118.069000 degrees West. This is about three miles (or 5 kilometers) northwest of the city of Whittier.
The entire area covers about 2.5 square miles (or 6.5 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the CDP.

In 2010, the population of West Whittier-Los Nietos was 25,540 people. This means there were about 10,138 people living in every square mile. Most of the people living here, about 87.6%, were of Hispanic or Latino background.
The census also showed that almost everyone, 99.6% of the population, lived in homes with families or housemates. Only a small number lived in group homes or institutions.
There were 6,698 households in total. Many of these households, about 49%, had children under 18 living in them. The average household had about 3.8 people.

History of the Area
Los Nietos is one of the oldest communities in Southern California. It has a long history!
- The Los Nietos School District was started way back in 1861.
- A Methodist church group was formed here in 1867.
The community grew up around a large piece of land called the Rancho Los Nietos. This rancho was a huge area. Los Nietos was even listed as a "township" in the 1860 and 1870 government counts. Back then, its area covered most of the old Rancho Los Nietos, stretching from the Puente Hills all the way south to Long Beach.
In 1860, the population was 605 people, and by 1870, it had grown to 1,544 people.
From the 1950s to the 1980s, people in the community could shop at the Whittier Downs Shopping Center.
Famous People from West Whittier-Los Nietos
- Herschel K. Mitchell (1913–2000) was a famous biochemist and geneticist. He was born in Los Nietos.
Schools in the Area
Students in West Whittier-Los Nietos attend schools in a few different districts.
- For high school, most students go to Pioneer High, which is part of the Whittier Union High School District.
- For elementary school, children attend schools in the Los Nietos School District and the Whittier City School District.
- There are two middle schools in the area: Katherine Edwards and Los Nietos.
- Several elementary schools serve the community, including Aeolian, Nelson, Phelan, Sorensen, and West Whittier.
