Westerdale (which is An Dail Shuas in Scottish Gaelic) is a small, spread-out village in Scotland. It's located in the Highland area, specifically in Caithness. This village is known for its "crofting" way of life. Crofting means people live on small farms and often work in other jobs too.
Westerdale sits right by the River Thurso. This river is famous for salmon fishing. The village is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of a town called Halkirk. The B870 road goes through Westerdale, connecting it to other places.
Dirlot Castle: A Historic Stronghold
About 3 kilometers (2 miles) south of Westerdale, you can find the ruins of Dirlot Castle. This castle is very old, dating back to the 1300s. It was built as a strong fortress.
Over many years, different powerful families owned Dirlot Castle. These included the Sutherlands, the Cheynes, the Gunns, and the Mackays. Each of these clans played a part in the castle's long history.
