Westerkwartier is a special area in the Groningen province of the Netherlands. It's called a municipality, which is like a local government area. In 2019, about 63,000 people lived here.
How Westerkwartier Was Formed
Westerkwartier is a fairly new municipality. It was officially created on January 1, 2019. This happened when several smaller municipalities joined together. These were Grootegast, Leek, Marum, and Zuidhorn. Part of Winsum also became part of Westerkwartier.
Local Government in Westerkwartier
Like all municipalities in the Netherlands, Westerkwartier has its own local government. This government helps manage the area and its services. The main leader is the Mayor, who helps run the municipality. There is also a Municipal council. This council is made up of elected people. They make important decisions for the community.
