Winsum is a town in the northeastern Netherlands. It used to be its own municipality. On January 1, 2019, Winsum joined with other towns like Bedum and Eemsmond. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Het Hogeland.
The town of Winsum was officially started in 1057. It was formed by combining three older villages: Obergum (in the North), Winsum (in the middle), and Bellingeweer (in the South). Most of the town's 8,000 people travel to the nearby city of Groningen for work or school.
Winsum has many interesting old buildings. You can find two traditional Dutch windmills there. There are also two historic churches and two canals. One of the Netherlands' oldest taverns is also in Winsum. The two windmills are named "De Ster" (The Star) and "De Vriendschap" (The Friendship). They were built in 1851 and 1801. The building where "De Gouden Karper" (The Golden Carp) tavern is located has been a tavern since the 1500s. It might be the oldest one in the Netherlands!
