Bedum is a small town in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. It used to be its own municipality, which is like a local government area. In 2021, about 8,650 people lived there.
On January 1, 2019, Bedum joined with three other nearby places. These were De Marne, Eemsmond, and Winsum. Together, they formed a new, bigger municipality called Het Hogeland.
Even though it's a small town, Bedum has some cool things to see and do. You can find supermarkets and several pubs there. It's also famous for its church tower, which leans quite a bit! A very famous football player, Arjen Robben, was born in Bedum on January 23, 1984. Bedum also has its own railway station.
The Leaning Tower of Bedum
One of the most interesting sights in Bedum is the tower of the St Walfridus church. This tower is 36 meters (about 118 feet) tall. It has become famous because it leans!
In fact, experts have figured out that the Bedum tower leans even more than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. If both towers were the same height, the Bedum tower would lean about 6 centimeters (about 2.4 inches) more than the Pisa tower.
