Eemsmond was a former municipality (like a local government area) in the north of the Groningen province in the Netherlands. It was located in the northeast part of the country. The name "Eemsmond" means "Ems Mouth," referring to the Ems River where it meets the sea.
In 2019, Eemsmond joined with three other municipalities: Bedum, De Marne, and Winsum. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Het Hogeland. Before it merged, Eemsmond had about 15,864 people living there.

History of Eemsmond
How Eemsmond Was Formed
The story of Eemsmond began on January 1, 1979. At that time, two smaller municipalities, Uithuizen and Uithuizermeeden, decided to combine. They formed a new municipality called Hefshuizen.
Growing Bigger
A few years later, on January 1, 1990, Hefshuizen grew even larger. Three more municipalities joined in: Kantens, Usquert, and Warffum. This made the area much bigger.
Changing the Name
Then, on January 1, 1992, the name of the municipality was officially changed. It went from Hefshuizen to Eemsmond. This new name, meaning "Ems Mouth," connected the area to its location near the Ems River and the sea.
