Ranomi Kromowidjojo (born August 20, 1990) is a famous retired swimmer from the Netherlands. She is known for her amazing speed in freestyle races. Ranomi has won three Olympic gold medals! She won one in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Olympics. Then, she won two more in the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter freestyle at the 2012 Olympics.

Ranomi also holds a world record in the 4×50 meter freestyle relay (short course) with her Dutch team. She has won a total of 45 medals at FINA World Championships, which are huge swimming competitions.

Ranomi's Swimming Journey

Ranomi started swimming when she was just three years old. She was on a family holiday in Spain when she first got into the water.

Early Career and Junior Success

Ranomi showed her talent early on. She won three medals at the European Junior Swimming Championships in 2005 and 2006. These wins were in the 50 meter freestyle and butterfly events.

First Big Wins (2006-2007)

In 2006, Ranomi made her first appearance in a major international competition. She was only 15 when she won her first senior medal. It was a silver medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay at the European Championships in Budapest.

In 2007, Ranomi competed in her first World Championships. She helped her team win a bronze medal in the 4×100 freestyle relay. Later that year, she helped set a world record in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay (short course).

Olympic Gold and World Records (2008)

The year 2008 was a big one for Ranomi. At the European Championships in Eindhoven, her team won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle. They even broke the world record!

A few weeks later, at the Short Course World Championships, she won another world title. This time it was in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay, and they broke another world record.

Just before her 18th birthday, Ranomi became an Olympic champion. She won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

More World Records (2009-2011)

In 2009, Ranomi continued her winning streak. At the World Championships in Rome, she won another gold medal in the 4×100 freestyle relay. Her team set a new world record with an amazing time of 3:31.72.

In 2010, Ranomi won individual gold medals at the Short Course World Championships. She won both the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter freestyle. She also helped her team win gold in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay.

In 2011, Ranomi and her team won another gold medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay at the World Aquatics Championships. She also won a bronze medal in the 100 meter freestyle.

Double Olympic Champion (2012)

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Ranomi and her teammates won a silver medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay.

Later, Ranomi set an Olympic record in the 100 meter freestyle semifinals. The next day, she won a gold medal in the final, setting a new Olympic record of 53.00 seconds.

She then won another gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle, completing a "sprint double." This means she won both the 50m and 100m freestyle races. She set another Olympic record of 24.05 seconds.

World Champion and Beyond (2013-2019)

In 2013, Ranomi won her first individual long course world title. She took home the gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona. She also earned three bronze medals in other events.

In 2015, she won a silver medal in the 50 meter freestyle at the World Championships. She also added two more silver medals in relay races.

Ranomi competed in her third Olympics in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. She finished 4th with her team in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay. She also placed 5th in the 100 meter freestyle and 6th in the 50 meter freestyle.

In 2019, she won a silver medal in the women's 50 meter butterfly event at the World Aquatics Championships.

International Swimming League

In 2019, Ranomi was part of Team Iron in the International Swimming League. She was amazing at winning all the "skin races" (a special type of sprint race) her team competed in.

Retirement (2022)

Ranomi Kromowidjojo announced her retirement from competitive swimming in January 2022. She said that she had achieved her goals as a professional athlete. Swimming will always be her passion, but she will no longer compete at a professional level.

Ranomi's Life Outside the Pool

Ranomi was born in Sauwerd, Netherlands. Her father is of Javanese Surinamese background, and her mother is Dutch.

In 2010, Ranomi became ill with viral meningitis while training. But she recovered and was able to compete later that year.

Ranomi studied at the Business School Notenboom in Eindhoven. She is married to fellow Dutch swimmer Ferry Weertman. They announced their engagement in 2019.

Ranomi also appeared on the 23rd season of the Dutch television show Wie is de Mol?.
