Westervoort (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌʋɛstərˈvoːrt]) is a town and a municipality in the eastern part of the Netherlands. A municipality is like a local government area. This town is special because two rivers, the Rhine and the IJssel, flow within its borders. Westervoort is very close to Arnhem, which is the capital city of the Gelderland province. Many people who live in Westervoort travel to Arnhem for work or school. It is actually the smallest municipality in the Netherlands when you look at its total area.
Getting Around Westervoort
Getting around Westervoort is quite easy! On December 11, 2011, a new railway station opened in the town. This was a big deal because it meant people could use trains again after 75 years!
Besides trains, public buses also run through Westervoort. These buses offer direct trips to Arnhem and nearby towns like Duiven and Zevenaar. If you travel by car, the A12 motorway passes just north of Westervoort. It has an exit that serves both Westervoort and the western parts of Duiven.
In the southern part of Westervoort, there's a small ferry boat. This ferry helps people cross the Rhine river to reach the town of Huissen.
