Westerwolde is a municipality (which is like a local government area) in the northeast of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of Groningen. The name Westerwolde comes from the local Gronings language.
This municipality was created on January 1, 2018. It was formed when two older municipalities, Bellingwedde and Vlagtwedde, joined together. Westerwolde still uses the old town halls in Sellingen and Wedde.
