Wheelersburg is a community in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. It's called a "census-designated place" (CDP) because it's a settled area that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for statistics.

This community is located along the northern banks of the Ohio River in southern Ohio. Wheelersburg is about 7 miles (11 km) east of Portsmouth and 14 miles (23 km) west of Ironton. It is part of Porter Township. In 2020, about 6,531 people lived there.

History of Wheelersburg

Wheelersburg was first known as Concord. It was officially mapped out in 1824. The town's current name honors Major Porter Wheeler, who was an early settler in the area.

By 1833, Wheelersburg had around 150 residents. A post office, first called Wheelersburgh, opened in 1879. Its name was changed to Wheelersburg in 1893.

In 1968, a very strong tornado hit the town. It was an F5 tornado, which is the strongest kind. Seven people sadly lost their lives, and 93 people were hurt. The damage cost nearly $5 million.

Football Success

The high school football team has won two state championships in Ohio. They won in 1989 and again in 2017. In 2011, the school's football stadium was updated. The new stadium was ready for the 2012 season, and the first game there was against their rival, Ironton.

Softball Achievements

Wheelersburg has also had great success in girls' softball.

  • The 11-12-year-old team won the state championship in 2001.
  • The 13-14-year-old and 15-16-year-old teams both won state championships in 2003.
  • The 9-10-year-old team won the state championship in 2007.
  • In 2018, the 11-12-year-old girls' softball team made history by winning the Little League World Series. They were the first team from Ohio (boys or girls) to win this championship!

Baseball Highlights

The Wheelersburg high school boys' baseball team has also won state titles. They won back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013.

Little League World Series Invitation

In 2007, the 11-12-year-old boys' Little League team was invited to play an exhibition game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This happened during the Little League World Series celebrations.
