Whistling Cay is a small island, also called an islet. It is about 19 acres in size. You can find it about 300 yards west of Mary Point on Saint John. Both of these are in the United States Virgin Islands.

This little island is covered with trees. On its northern side, there are high cliffs. These cliffs reach up to about 130 feet high. On the southeast side of the island, there's a small beach made of gravel. Whistling Cay is separated from Saint John by a channel called the Fungi Passage. This passage is about 21 feet deep.

History of the Islet

Checking Boats in the Past

Back in the 1800s, during the 19th century, people called customs officials worked on Whistling Cay. Their job was to stop and check boats. These boats were traveling between the British Virgin Islands and what were then called the Danish Virgin Islands. The officials made sure that boats followed the rules for trade and travel.

Part of a National Park

Today, Whistling Cay is a protected area. It is located inside the Virgin Islands National Park. This means the island and its surrounding waters are kept safe. This helps to protect the natural beauty and wildlife for everyone to enjoy.
