The white-breasted wood wren (Henicorhina leucosticta) is a small songbird. It belongs to the wren family. This bird lives in many places. You can find it from central Mexico all the way to northeastern Peru and Suriname.

What Does It Look Like?

An adult white-breasted wood wren is about 10 centimetres (3.9 in) long. It weighs around 16 grams (0.56 oz). Its upper body is a chestnut brown color. The top of its head is a bit darker.

It has pale stripes above its eyes. The sides of its head and neck have black and white streaks. Its belly is white, turning a light tan color lower down. The wings and its very short tail have black stripes. Young wrens are not as bright. Their upper parts are duller, and their bellies are grey.

Its Special Song

The start of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Some say the wren's song sounds like this!

The call of this bird sounds like a sharp cheek. It can also make an explosive tuck sound. Its song is often described as cheer oweet oweet cheery weather.

A bird expert named Luis Baptista thought its song was special. He said it sounded like the famous opening of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Just like some other wrens, these birds often sing together. This is called duetting. It means two birds sing at the same time.

Where It Lives and How It Lives

The white-breasted wood wren lives in lowland areas. It also lives in foothills up to 1,850 metres (6,070 ft) high. It prefers tropical wet forests. You can also find it in nearby tall second growth areas. These are forests that have grown back after being cut down.

This wren builds a neat nest with a roof. It usually places the nest on the ground. Sometimes, it builds it very low in the plants. The nest is hidden by thick plants. The female bird sits on the eggs for about two weeks until they hatch. The young birds leave the nest after about two more weeks.

This type of wren might also build a "dormitory nest." This nest is for one bird or a whole family. It is usually higher than their breeding nest. It can be up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) off the ground.

White-breasted wood wrens look for food in pairs or family groups. They actively search in low plants or on the ground. They mostly eat insects and other small creatures without backbones.
