White Canyon (San Juan County, Utah) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

White Canyon is a beautiful and exciting canyon located in San Juan County, Utah, in the United States. It's famous for its amazing natural rock formations and ancient homes built by early people.

Exploring White Canyon

White Canyon is a special place known for its incredible natural features. It has deep, narrow sections called slot canyons. These canyons are formed over many years by water carving through the rock. The canyon is also home to ancient homes built into the cliffs by the Ancestral Puebloans.

Natural Wonders of the Canyon

One of the most famous sights in White Canyon is Sipapu Bridge. This is one of the largest natural bridges in the entire world! A natural bridge is like a giant stone arch that forms when water erodes rock, leaving a bridge-like structure. Sipapu Bridge is a truly impressive sight.

The canyon starts near the Abajo Mountains. It then flows through a protected area called Natural Bridges National Monument. Finally, White Canyon empties into Lake Powell. A road, Utah State Route 95, runs alongside the canyon for much of its length. This allows visitors to see many parts of this amazing natural area.

Ancient Homes and History

Long ago, people known as the Ancestral Puebloans lived in this area. They were skilled builders who created homes right into the cliffs of the canyon. These homes are called cliff dwellings. You can still see some of these ancient structures today. They show us how these early people lived and adapted to their environment.

The Black Hole: A Canyoneering Challenge

One part of White Canyon is especially deep and narrow. It is known as the Black Hole. This section is about 500 feet (152 meters) long and is always filled with water. In some spots, the canyon walls are only a few feet (about 1 meter) apart!

People who enjoy a sport called canyoneering sometimes explore the Black Hole. Canyoneering involves traveling through canyons using skills like hiking, climbing, and sometimes swimming. Because the water in the Black Hole can be very cold, canyoneers often wear wetsuits. This helps protect them from getting too cold, a condition called hypothermia.

It's important to be careful in the Black Hole because of the high risk of flash flooding. A flash flood is a sudden, fast-moving flood. This canyon has a large drainage basin, which means a big area of land drains water into it. Heavy rain far away can quickly send a lot of water rushing through the narrow canyon.
