Discovering White Creek's Past

Settlers first came to the area of White Creek after a land grant called the Cambridge Patent in 1761. The very first people to settle in what is now the hamlet of White Creek were Quakers.

John Allen built the first permanent home in 1757. He added more to it in 1770. This house is still one of the best-preserved buildings from the 1700s in White Creek. Other old homes like the Cornell House and the Christopher Allen House were built in 1772. They show different styles of homes from that time.

Local stories say that the Christopher Allen House was once a tavern. A tavern was like a hotel and restaurant. Its ballroom was even used as a temporary hospital for soldiers. This happened after the nearby Battle of Waloomsac (Bennington) in 1777.
