The White Tackstem (Calycoseris wrightii) is a pretty spring wildflower. It's an annual plant, which means it lives for only one growing season. It's one of two types of plants in its group, called Calycoseris. The other one is the Yellow Tackstem. Both of these plants belong to the sunflower family, just like sunflowers!

Where White Tackstem Grows

This interesting wildflower grows in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. You can find it in places like California, Nevada, and parts of Utah. It also grows in New Mexico, Arizona, and western Texas. In Mexico, it's found in northern Baja California and Sonora.

What White Tackstem Looks Like

The White Tackstem has white, daisy-like flowers. Each flower can be more than 2.0 inches (5 cm) across. When it grows among other plants, it can reach over 45 cm (18 inches) tall.

One special thing about this flower is its outer petals. When these petals are closed, they have two thin purple stripes on the outside. These stripes look like fine reddish lines. The petals themselves are about 2 to 3 cm (1 in) long.

When and Where to Find It

This plant is a spring wildflower. It grows in desert areas and is very common after winter rains. You can find White Tackstem at elevations up to 4000 ft (1,220 m) above sea level.
