The Whitefish Range is a chain of mountains. It stretches from British Columbia, Canada, down into Montana, United States. This mountain range is about 76 miles (122 km) long and 58 miles (93 km) wide.

Water from the east side of the range flows into the North Fork Flathead River. Water from the west side goes into the Whitefish River. Both of these rivers are part of the larger Columbia River system.

Where is the Whitefish Range?

The Whitefish Range is found north of Columbia Falls. It is also north of Flathead Lake and east of Eureka. The Flathead River separates it from another mountain chain called the Swan Range.

Mountain Heights

The Whitefish Range is not known for having super tall mountains. The highest peaks in the U.S. part of the range are Nasukoin Mountain, which is 8,086 feet (2,465 m) high, and Lake Mountain, at 7,814 feet (2,382 m). In Canada, the tallest peak is Mount Doupe, reaching 8,740 feet (2,660 m).

Wildlife and Nature

The Whitefish Range is west of Glacier National Park. Most of this area is wild and untouched. It is home to many types of conifer trees. These include tall western red cedar and Douglas fir trees.

Animals of the Range

You can find many large animals living here. These include black bears, grizzly bears, and mountain lions. There are also different kinds of fish, smaller mammals, and amphibians.

Protecting the Wilderness

A part of the Whitefish Range in the U.S. is a protected area. It is called the Ten Lakes Wilderness Study Area. This special place covers about 34,000 acres. It is managed by the Kootenai National Forest.

Exploring Ten Lakes

The Ten Lakes Wilderness Study Area has more than 89 miles of trails. It also has many mountain lakes and high alpine peaks. From here, you can enjoy amazing views into Canada.
