A Look Back at Whites Flat's History

Whites Flat has a simple but interesting history, especially concerning its post office and community hall.

The Old Post Office

The Whites Flat Post Office first opened on October 1, 1897. In 1915, Whites Flat was a very small place. It had just a post office and a local hall. The hall was used for many things. It was a school, a church, a place for dances, and where people gave talks. All this was for fewer than twelve people living there! Local residents built the hall themselves.

The school stayed open for many years. In 1942, during World War II, trenches were dug for students to hide in if there were air raids. In 1950, people still talked about the "tiny little post office at White Flat." They hoped this old building with a thatched roof would never be torn down.

Where is the Post Office Now?

The post office in Whites Flat is now closed. However, the building itself still exists! It was known as the "smallest post office in Australia." This little building was moved to the Koppio Smithy Museum in nearby Koppio. The museum is owned by the National Trust of South Australia.

The Community Hall Today

Even though the post office moved, the White Flat Community Hall is still open. It continues to be a place for people in the community to gather.
