Whitton is a small village in England. It is located in the area of Stockton-on-Tees, which is part of Durham. You can find Whitton north-west of the main town of Stockton-on-Tees. It is also close to other villages like Stillington and Thorpe Thewles.

Whitton used to be its own "civil parish." A civil parish is like a small local area with its own council or local government. Now, Whitton is part of a larger parish called Stillington and Whitton.

Exploring Whitton's Nature

Just about 500 meters (or half a kilometer) south of Whitton village, there's a special place called Whitton Bridge Pasture. This area is about 3.2 hectares in size. To give you an idea, one hectare is roughly the size of an international rugby field.

What is a Site of Special Scientific Interest?

Whitton Bridge Pasture is known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, or SSSI for short. This means it's a protected area because it has important plants, animals, or geological features. The grassland here is very rich in different types of plant species. It's a great place for nature lovers!

Whitton's History as a Parish

For a long time, Whitton was a "township" within a larger parish called Grindon. A township was a small area, often part of a parish, that had its own local responsibilities.

Becoming Its Own Parish

In 1866, Whitton became its own civil parish. This meant it had more control over its local matters. Later, on April 1, 1983, a part of the nearby Stillington parish joined with Whitton.

Renaming the Parish

Just a few months later, on July 1, 1983, the combined parish was renamed "Stillington & Whitton." This is the name it still has today. Back in 1961, before it merged with Stillington, the parish of Whitton had a population of 913 people.
