Who Was William B. Royall?

William Bedford Royall was born on April 15, 1825, in Halifax, Virginia. He grew up to become a dedicated soldier. His military career lasted for over 40 years. He served the United States during a very important time in its history.

Early Life and First Wars

Royall began his military service in 1846. This was during the Mexican–American War. He led a group of volunteer soldiers from Missouri. These volunteers were mounted, meaning they rode horses. He took part in several battles during this war. These included the Battle of La Canada and the Battle of El Embudo. He also helped in the Siege of Pueblo de Taos.

After the Mexican-American War, Royall continued his career. He became a first lieutenant in the United States Cavalry in 1855. By 1861, he was promoted to a captain.

Loyalty During the Civil War

The American Civil War began in 1861. This was a very difficult time for the United States. Many people from the South joined the Confederacy. Royall was born in the South. His own uncle, Sterling Price, became a general for the Confederacy.

However, William Royall chose to remain loyal to the Union. He fought for the United States Army. He served in the Army of the Potomac, which was a major Union army. He took part in important battles like the Siege of Yorktown (1862) and the Battle of Hanover Court House. His loyalty was very important during this time of division.

After the Civil War

After the Civil War ended in 1865, Royall continued to serve. He was stationed in Kansas. There, he served under General George Crook. He continued to rise through the ranks. Eventually, he became a brigadier general. This is a very high rank in the army.

William Royall retired from the army on October 19, 1887. He had served his country for 41 years. He passed away on December 13, 1895, in Washington, D.C.. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This cemetery is a special place for American heroes.
