Sir William Barne was the oldest son of Sir George Barne (1532–1592). His mother was Anne, whose father was Sir William Garrard. Sir George Barne, William's father, was a successful merchant in London. He held important positions, including being the Lord Mayor of London and a member of Parliament (an MP) for the City of London.
Sir William Barne's Life and Work
When his father passed away in 1592, William inherited his lands in Kent. He became a significant landowner in the area. From 1596, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Kent. This meant he helped keep law and order in the county.
Before that, in 1593, he was chosen to be an MP for Great Grimsby in the English Parliament. This was his only time serving in national politics. In 1603, he was given the title of Knight, becoming "Sir" William Barne.
Most of his life was spent managing his properties in Woolwich, Plumstead, and Bexley. He also took part in local county matters. Sir William enjoyed connecting with writers and thinkers of his time. - Sir William (1593-1649): He was the oldest son and inherited his father's estate. He married Dorothy, whose father was the MP Sir Peter Manwood.
- Robert (1596-1650): He lived in Grimsby. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Twysden.
- Miles (1600-1651): He became a parson (a type of priest) in Kent. He married Jane, daughter of Henry Travers, a lawyer from London.
- Anne (1587-1633): She married Sir William Lovelace. Their children included the poet Richard Lovelace and Francis Lovelace, who became the Governor of New York. They also had a daughter named Anne Lovelace (1610-1652) who married Rev. John Gorsuch (1600-1647).
After Sir William Barne passed away, his wife Anne married Edward Pulter (who died in 1626).
