Joining the Fight
In November 1862, when he was about 17 years old, William Dickey became an officer. He started as a first lieutenant. His first assignment was with the 168th New York Volunteer Infantry regiment.
He served with this group until October 1863. After a short break, he joined a new unit. In February 1864, he became a captain in the 15th New York Heavy Artillery. This unit used large cannons.
Rising Through the Ranks
William Dickey continued to serve bravely. In May 1865, he was promoted to major. This meant he was in charge of even more soldiers. He finished his service with the 15th New York Heavy Artillery in August 1865. The Civil War ended around this time.
Earning the Medal of Honor
Many years later, on June 10, 1896, William Dickey received the Medal of Honor. This special award was given to him for his heroic actions. These actions took place during the Second Battle of Petersburg. This battle was a very tough fight during the Civil War. It happened in Virginia in 1864.
