The William E. Borah Apartment at Windsor Lodge is a historic apartment building in Washington, D.C.. It is located at 2139-2141 Wyoming Avenue NW. Apartment 21 in this building was the home of William Edgar Borah (1865–1940) for a long time.

William Borah was a U.S. Senator from Idaho. He was also a candidate for president in 1936. Borah was a very important person in how America dealt with other countries after World War I. He helped make sure the U.S. did not join the League of Nations. He also supported the Washington Naval Treaty in the early 1920s. This apartment is the best place left that shows where Borah lived. Because of his connection to it, the whole building became a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

About Windsor Lodge

The apartment complex, once called Windsor Lodge, is in Washington's Kalorama Heights neighborhood. You can find it at the corner of Wyoming Avenue NW and Thompson Place NW. It has two four-story buildings. These buildings are connected by a wall at the back, forming a U shape.

The outside walls are made of red brick, but they have been painted a cream color. The two parts of the building look similar. However, they are not exactly the same in their design and details. Each part has its main entrance in the middle of the front. The entrance on the left has a wide roof supported by brackets. This roof also forms a balcony on the second floor. The entrance on the right has a more detailed porch. William Borah's apartment was on the second floor, on the right side of the eastern half of the building.

Who Was William Borah?

William Borah was born in Illinois. He studied law with his brother-in-law. In 1890, he started a successful law practice in Boise, Idaho. He soon became active in the Republican Party.

In 1907, he was elected to the United States Senate. There, he became a powerful member of the Foreign Relations Committee. He did not want the U.S. to enter World War I at first. But he strongly opposed the Treaty of Versailles and the creation of the League of Nations after the war.

Borah often had his own ideas. He frequently disagreed with the leaders of his party. Sometimes, he even supported laws proposed by the Democratic Party. He was known as a progressive thinker in his party. This was at a time when many other Republicans were more conservative.

Borah's Home in D.C.

This apartment was William Borah's main home from 1913 until 1929. He moved in not long after the building was finished. It is one of two homes in Washington that are closely linked to his life. He did not own a home in Idaho.
