William Forbes Marshall (born May 8, 1888 – died January 1959) was an Irish poet and a Presbyterian minister. He came from Sixmilecross, a small town in County Tyrone, Ireland. He was known for his poems and for studying the way people spoke in his home region.

Who Was William Forbes Marshall?

William Forbes Marshall was a talented writer and a respected religious leader. He spent most of his life in Northern Ireland. People often called him "The Bard of Tyrone." This nickname shows how much he was loved for his poetry.

Early Life and Education

Marshall's father was a principal teacher. He taught at Sixmilecross National School. This is where William first began his education. Later, he attended Royal School Dungannon. He even wrote the school song for this famous school! After that, he continued his studies at Queens College Galway.

A Poet and a Minister

For more than thirty years, Marshall served as a Presbyterian minister. He worked in Castlerock, County Londonderry. Being a minister meant he led church services and helped people in his community.

At the same time, he was a very active poet. He wrote many well-known poems. Some of his famous works include Hi Uncle Sam, Me an' me Da, Sarah Ann, and Our Son. His poem Me an' me Da is also known as Livin' in Drumlister.

Studying Language

Marshall was also an expert on Mid Ulster English. This is the main way people speak in the Ulster region of Ireland. He even had a series on the BBC radio called Ulster Speech. In this series, he talked about the unique words and phrases used in Ulster.

He was a very productive writer. Besides poems, he wrote a book called Ulster Sails West. This book was about people from Ulster who moved to North America in the 1700s.

Remembering His Work

To honor William Forbes Marshall, an event is held every year. It's called the W.F. Marshall Summer School. This school takes place at Magee College in Londonderry. It celebrates his contributions to poetry and language.
